Kenavon Drive, Reading

What we want to achieve

Kenavon Drive, Reading

L&Q want to create a new destination for Reading with a new central riverside square, providing facilities such as restaurants, a convenience store and landscaped open space for everyone to enjoy.  The development will create between 700 and 800 new homes including homes for affordable rent and shared ownership.

We’d have been inspired by the history of the site of the former Huntley & Palmer Biscuit Factory and we hope to reflect this in a modern way within the design or the buildings and spaces. We also wish to reflect and respect the listed prison opposite and the Abbey ruins.

A draft layout is shown below, with some key features including

  • Materials which reflect the original heritage of the site, with brick detailing being used to reflect the Victorian factory;
  • A layout which creates new landscaped avenues leading to the central public spaces, including one which responds to the original railway line which served the biscuit building;
  • A riverside square with inside and outside space for dining;
  • A rejuvenated riverside walk including new planting and places for people to sit.
  • A central, 19 storey building, creating a focal point and landmark for the development
  • A proportion of the development will be family houses and duplexes, creating a mixed and vibrant development.
